Targeted at road riders who like to take their rides onto rougher surfaces, the Mavic Kysrium Pro Allroad Disc offers a sturdy, wide-stance tubeless rim, a quick-engaging hub and the easy braking that discs provide. Two BikeRadar testers had the chance to ride the wheels at Mavic's launch in Wyoming, where we tackled 60 miles of burly gravel roads, plus 20 miles of tarmac just for good measure.
Mavic has taken a beating recently for its narrow rims as other companies have trended wider. Mavic’s first carbon clinchers were 13mm, for example, while the likes of Zipp and ENVE have gone 17, 18, 19 and even up to 21mm on some models.
With the Kysrium Pro Allroad Disc, Mavic has gone to a 19mm internal width, and is selling the wheelset complete with 30mm Yksion Elite Allroad tubeless-ready tyres.
So why wider? Yes, it’s a trend, but there is something to it. A wide rim and a plump tyre can yield better traction, better suspension and, to a certain degree, lower rolling resistance. When rattling around on dirt and gravel roads, bigger is usually better.
With tyres pumped to 80psi, the Allroad wheel/tyre system did a great job on the lonely country roads, soaking up some of the smaller bumps and genrally defying the sharp rocks and gravel. Neither of us flatted, but a few others in our group of 35 or so few certainly did.
