The Eurobike trade show in Friedrichshafen, Germany is a great place to gauge trends for the coming year. One trend we were pleased to see is the expansion of parents' options for balance bikes, the no-pedal two wheeler that lets kids learn balance with their feet near the ground, usually allowing them to skip training wheels altogether when they get a pedal bike. Other trends from the bike industry at large trickled down into kids bikes, too: (tiny) fat bikes, bamboo bikes, recycled-material bikes and, yes, electric bikes.
Not every bike company plays the Eurobike game, so you won't see any Trek or Specialized kids bikes in this gallery. Also, lamentably, our top-choice kids brand Islabikes was not there.
One cool find was Wishbone Design Studio balance bikes, which can go from either little kick bikes to taller kick bikes, or even from a trike to the little balance bike to the taller kick bike. They also have Recycled Edition balance bikes made from recycled materials.

For kids helmets, a few relatively newer players showed some interesting wares. The Dutch company Egg has an innovative multisport helmet with a variety of playful skins that can be pulled over it. The helmets double as ski and bike helmets, so you can double the life of what will be soon outgrown. The helmets use four materials for safety, collectively dubbed "Flexible Adaptive Sandwich Technology", since the helmet is somewhat flexible. Egg helmets have an ABS outer shell, with EPP and EVA cores and an air bladder that can be pumped up with a finger.
