Brussels (AFP) — The spectator hit by former Paris-Roubaix champion Johan Vansummeren (Garmin-Sharp) during the Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) on April 6 is out of a medically-induced coma, according to reports on Wednesday by Het Laatste Nieuws and Het Nieuwsblad.

“She looks around her and she can move, but not yet speak,” said Philippe Reyntjens, husband of 65-year-old Marie-Claire Moreels. “I hope everything will go in the right direction. I’ll know more on the weekend.”

Moreels was spectating the Tour of Flanders from a traffic island when Vansummeren collided with her. She suffered severe head trauma, which required placement in an artificial coma. Moreels’ family subsequently acquitted Vansummeren of responsibility for the collision.
