MOSCOW (AFP) — Medal-winning Russian track and road cyclist Kirill Sveshnikov has been suspended from competition and training after testing positive for a banned substance, the Russian anti-doping agency RUSADA said Wednesday.

The ruling was based on Sveshnikov’s ‘A’ sample from the Russian track championships in January, RUSADA said in a statement, without disclosing what the banned substance was.

Russia for years had a poor reputation for doping violations but tried to clean up its act ahead of the Winter Olympics in Sochi held last month.

Sveshnikov, 22, won the bronze medal at the world cycling championships in Minsk last year and raced for the Lokosphinx team.
