One Rider's Journey to RAAM

Editor’s Note:  RBR Premium Member Ed Garrison barfed behind a convenience store 60 miles into his first century ride a few short years ago. But he rallied and finished the ride strong. He’s been ramping up his riding – and his goals – ever since. His next one of note: the solo Race Across America (RAAM), starting June 10.

Ed has agreed to share his story of how a self-described “ordinary 53-year-old guy” decided to try to slay this particular dragon. It started with that first century ride, which Ed describes, below, in the first of a series of articles he’ll contribute to RBR leading up to RAAM.

I hope you enjoy reading about a fellow rider’s journey toward something most of us only dream about. As with just about everything we cover in RBR, Ed’s insights will surely prove useful – even if only applicable in small doses – to all of us who ride the road. – John

    How Can I Improve My Century Time by September?


    Question: I live in the Southeast and ride year-round. I'm 5-foot-11 and 200 pounds. I recently completed a hilly century in a bit under 6 hours. I'm planning to ride another one in September and I want to go faster. I don't have hills to train on but I do like to lift weights. I know I would climb better if I gained strength and lost weight. How should I use the next five months to peak in September? -- Danny H.
