MADINAT AL SHAMAL, Qatar (AFP) — André Greipel, a narrow second to Tom Boonen on Wednesday, took Thursday’s fifth stage at the Tour of Qatar. Greipel (Lotto-Belisol) was fastest in the bunch sprint to close the 159-kilometer leg from Al Zubara Fort to Madinat Al Shamal.

Aidis Kruopis (Orica-GreenEdge) was second and Theo Bos (Belkin) was third.

Niki Tersptra (Omega Pharma-Quick Step) retained his lead in the overall standings ahead of Friday’s sixth and final stage.

Barring misfortune, Tersptra is poised for victory on Doha’s Corniche on Friday.

He leads Omega Pharma teammate Tom Boonen by 17 seconds, with a 20-second advantage over Jürgen Roelandts (Lotto).

“We controlled the stage today well, not taking any risks and letting the other teams work in the final section. I’m optimistic for tomorrow,” said Tersptra.
