Time Trials Are for Everyone

Like a maturing fine whine, this time of year among my cycling buddies is devoted to equal parts complaining about what lousy shape we’re all in, and how poorly we’re going to ride the annual Tundra Time Trial most of us do in mid-February.

While it seems that February is an odd time for a time trial, when you reflect on it, there’s really no bad time to test yourself – against yourself. Because, more than any other way to view a TT – especially one you do every year at the same time, or one you ride regularly on the same course – it’s a benchmark you can use to measure yourself.

Following is an article contributed by RBR Premium Member Peter Wimberg, a USA Cycling Level 1 Power Certified Coach who runs Cinci Cycling Coach in Cincinnati, Ohio. As a rider, Coach Wimberg specializes in the individual TT and has won numerous regional and state championships. He makes the case that time trials are for everyone – no matter how you ride. And that they deliver benefits you might not have considered.

Do More Miles Produce More Strength?

Question: It appears that the strongest cyclists on our club rides are those who do the most miles before the official start. Some guys show up after already doing 20 or 30 miles, then they're unbeatable in the finishing sprint. Should I be doing more miles instead of resting before these rides? -- Dino A.

Calvin Jones' Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair

As bicycles get more sophisticated, what with advances in carbon frames and components, electronic drivetrains and hydraulic disc brakes for the road, not to mention the myriad new bottom bracket and headset configurations -- it’s pays to keep on hand an excellent up-to-date bicycle repair manual. Enter Park Tool’s 3rd Edition Big Blue Book of Bicycle Repair by Calvin Jones ($24.95; available in bicycle shops, bookstores and online).

While there are lots of things to like about this 241-page softcover book packed with color photos, among my favorite features is that it’s for all bicycles. So this one book tells you what you need to know to fix all the bikes in your stable, from your favorite road bike(s) to your kids’ cruisers or mountain bikes, to your spouse’s everyday get-around machine.
