Cyclist, Know Thyself


I wasn’t as trained for the ride as I wanted to be. It was on a course I had never ridden, with steeper climbs than I had ever done. And even steeper, technical descents. It was the coldest day, by far, of the fall.

In short, riding the Hincapie Gran Fondo two Saturdays ago in Greenville, S.C., really tested my cycling self-knowledge. It took the full breadth of knowing what to wear, how to ride, where to push the pace and where to conserve energy, to get me through the challenging 80-mile course and enjoy the experience. I think we all keep a running notebook in our minds of what our strengths and weaknesses are as riders, what gear and equipment work best for us under certain conditions

Indoor Trainer Safety Warning

 

Today’s column is a simple yet important bicycle safety warning covering one critical detail about using indoor trainers. It was spurred by this Comment from a reader with the pen name “dyonchik,” who shared,

“My carbon 2010 Cannondale Synapse suffered excessive wear on the rear dropouts. After the C'dale rep found out that I used the bike on a Computrainer 1-2 times a week, he refused to warranty the frame. Even though there is nothing in the documentation or warranty about not using a trainer, the best they would offer is 20% off full retail on a new bike … essentially nothing.
